I have been asked a couple times why type of system I use at home to test VMware VI3/vSphere configurations.
Here is a quick rundown of my Test Rig:
System: | Dell XPS 720 |
Processor: | Intel Q6600 (2.4GHz Quad Core w/VT enabled) |
Memory: | 8GB (Max supported) |
Internal Drives: | 4 Seagate 500GB with 2 500GB RAID 1 Mirrors (onboard RAID) |
External Drives: | 2 Seagate 250GB in a Rosewill USB/eSATA enclosure in RAID 1 |
Operating System: | Window Vista Ultimate x64 SP2 |
Virtualization Layer: | VMware Workstation (can’t tell which version) |
iSCSI Storage: |
Starwind iSCSI SAN |
Pretty much anything I need to test, configure, or reference I can perform on this single box.
I used to run VMware Workstation 6.5x, but am now running a different version.
It just goes to show that not a lot of hardware can go a long way.
I’m planning on moving to Windows 7 before too long. From what I have seen, I should get a decent performance boost.
